A4AI and The Gambia sign a memorandum of understanding to advance universal access

The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) and The Gambia Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy signed an agreement on June 23rd, 2022 focusing on convening stakeholders from all ICT sectors to engage them in the review of the universal service policy, development of the national strategy for universal access and advancing overall digital development. In addition, the entities will also collaborate to align the universal service policy and strategy with the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) 2017 Universal Service Act.

Using a multistakeholder approach, a coalition will be convened to guide the work under this agreement focusing on advancing access to affordable and meaningful connectivity while also supporting rural connectivity and mainstreaming gender equality in The Gambia’s digital development. Through evidence-based research and the pursuit of capacity building opportunities, the entities will strengthen the advancement of policy and regulatory frameworks for inclusive digital development to achieve affordable and meaningful connectivity for all.

Ms Sonia Jorge, A4AI Executive Director said:

We are thrilled to establish this partnership with The Gambia Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. This agreement paves the way for extensive collaboration and partnership. We will work together to both challenge and support one another on the path to ensuring affordable and meaningful connectivity for all Gambians.”

A4AI’s Head of Africa, Ms. Onica N. Makwakwa will serve as the focal point working directly with the stakeholders in The Gambia. For further information on this partnership, please contact Ms. Onica N. Makwakwa at onica.makwakwa@webfoundation.org.
