MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY NIGERIA — Nigeria was the first African country to join the Alliance for Affordable Internet, and a memorandum of understanding was signed between A4AI and the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology in October 2013. The Ministry of Communication Technology is a Ministry created by the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to foster a knowledge based economy and information society in Nigeria. The Ministry was created to facilitate ICT as a key tool in the transformation agenda for Nigeria in the areas of job creation, economic growth and transparency of governance. The West Africa Telecommunication Regulators Assembly (WATRA) was established in November 2004. Its current membership is 15 countries with headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. WATRA consists of independent National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and departments for regulation of Telecommunications services established by governments of member states in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sub-region and Mauritania.
